boycottusa
Recently I went on a journey of cancelling subscriptions that I had for products that are from the USA. This is to show US companies that fascism is not acceptable on this planet, we had it before and we do not want it again. The best way to show what you want is with your wallet, as most of the govs on this planet rely on companies and people to pay taxes, so that they can exist. When you stop paying, they notice….and they want you back. So this is the best way to show your support for the EU, and show that you do not accept what the USA is doing now.
But it seems not everyone understand that, or thinks that there is no options left for us, but only to use US products and services. So, humor me for a moment and read.
The theme of today and many month into the future, maybe even years is #boycottusa My journey from US dependency to ish freedom…well EU dependency, LOL
Self hosting
I decided that the best way to be free and independent is to self host the stuff I need for my life and work. Now this section is not for all, I will just briefly list the things I self host, but remember this is technical and you do not have to do this, I will point to some Cloud providers in the EU if you would like to try in Claude.
If you are hosting anything in Claude, and do not want to self host in your home or office, then pick at least one of the EU providers:
- MythicBeast (UK)
- OVH (France)
- Infomaniak (Swiss)
I host most of the things that I need locally, I try not to use cloud services any more, as it’s just somebody else’s machine, not mine. I have multiple machines that I cluster together and spin off VMs for all my needs. I use custom hardware, and Open Source software on it for all my needs.
EU services wherever possible
Here are my picks for alternatives or even better services for the stuff I had in US companies:
MS Office >> LibreOffice - this one hurt MS a lot, as I am actively advertising the switch, and due to this been the most easy step you can take, if you want the OfficeSuite to look like MS Office, pick OnlyOffice.
Windows >> I do not use it, so nothing to do here, but you can switch to Linux, best option for Win users is MintLinux, as it looks and feels like Windows
AppleMusic >> I don’t subscribe to Apple Music, but I was purchasing music from iTunes, now I just use qobuz.com Nothing to look back at.
iCloud Drive >> ProtonDrive
FaceTime >> ProtonMeet
iMessage >> Threema
WhatsApp, and Signal >> Threema (I will add here that Signal is not bad, you could simply stay with them, as they the ones that oppose the US gov, but still US, and BTW I did get myself Meshtastic as well, will try to move some of my Friends to 868MHz LOL, the old days of my radio engineering times is back baby :D )
Google Mail >> ProtonMail
ChatGPT >> Lumo (protn AI)
Google search >> Ecosia
Hover (domains) >> Infomaniak and OVH
CloudFlare (Domains) >> Infomaniak and OVH
CloudFlare DNS >> BunnyDNS (transfer in progress)
CloudFlareCDN >> BunnyCDN (transfer in progress)
Wasabi Block Storage >> exoscale object-storage
Maybe you do not need that social media in the end
I do not use social media, I personally think it’s the toilet of the internet, and I have the habit of not sticking my head into it, but… If I need to use any type of social for communication with certain groups, I use Mastodon, the best on the planet, and I know this one is US, but no ads, no addictive algorithms, no data points for manipulation.
Hit me via the Contact form if you have any better ideas, or suggestion for EU services etc.
Peace!
