// Acceptable Use Policy

The following describes activities and content that are prohibited in connection with SCVGN services.

Illegal content and abusive activities

  • Illegal activities — Any use of the services to engage in, further, promote, or encourage unlawful conduct, including dissemination of content determined by a court of competent jurisdiction to be illegal.
  • Fraudulent or harmful activities — Activities that are deceptive or harmful to others, or that would harm SCVGN’s operations or reputation. This includes disseminating fraudulent goods, services, schemes, or promotions (e.g. Ponzi schemes, phishing, pharming), impersonating another person or entity, or engaging in other misleading practices.
  • Intellectual property violations — Using the services in a manner that violates, infringes on, or misappropriates the intellectual property or proprietary rights of any third party, including copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or privacy rights.
  • Unlawful pornography — Disseminating child sexual abuse material or depictions of nudity or sexual activity obtained or shared without the consent of those depicted.
  • Violent, harassing, or abusive content — Content that incites or threatens violence, promotes terrorism, harasses or invades the privacy of any individual, creates a risk to public safety or health, or threatens harm on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender, gender identity, disability, or immigration status.
  • Controlled substances — Unlawfully selling or distributing controlled substances, including illegal or prescription drugs.

Security violations

You may not use the services to violate the security or integrity of any network, computer, communications system, software application, or computing device (each, a “System”). Prohibited activities include:

  • Harmful software — Distributing viruses, malware, spyware, adware, Trojan horses, worms, time bombs, or any other technology designed to damage, intercept, or expropriate any system, programme, or data.
  • Unauthorised access — Accessing or using any system without permission, including probing, scanning, or testing the vulnerability of a system, or attempting to breach security or authentication measures.
  • Interception — Monitoring data or traffic on a system without permission.
  • Falsification of origin — Using fake or misleading TCP/IP packet headers, email headers, or any part of a message describing its origin or route. This does not prohibit the use of aliases or anonymous remailers.

Network abuse

You may not make network connections to any users, hosts, or networks without permission to communicate with them. Prohibited activities include:

  • Disruptive monitoring or crawling — Monitoring or crawling a system in a manner that impairs or disrupts it, or harvesting or scraping content from the services.
  • Deceitful actions — Introducing contaminating code into the services, or collecting information by deceit or covert means (such as phishing, password theft, spidering, or harvesting).
  • Intentional interference — Interfering with the proper functioning of any system, including deliberate attempts to overload a system via mail bombing, broadcast attacks, flooding, or denial of service (DoS) attacks.
  • Prohibited network services — Operating open proxies, open mail relays, open recursive DNS servers, Tor exit nodes, or similar network services.
  • Circumventing restrictions — Using manual or electronic means to bypass any use limitations placed on a system, such as access limits and storage restrictions.
  • Retaliation against SCVGN — Any conduct likely to result in retaliation against SCVGN, its services, employees, officers, or agents, including behaviour that results in any SCVGN server becoming the target of a DoS attack.
  • Withholding identity — Any activity intended to conceal identity or contact information, including omission, deletion, forgery, or misreporting of transmission or identification information.
  • Cryptocurrency mining — Mining any cryptocurrency without explicit written permission from SCVGN.

Email and messaging abuse

You may not distribute, publish, send, or facilitate the sending of unsolicited mass email or messages, promotions, advertising, or solicitations (“spam”). You may not alter or obscure mail headers or assume a sender’s identity without explicit permission.

You must use reasonable efforts to secure any device or network within your control against being used in breach of applicable anti-spam laws. You may not take any action that directly or indirectly results in any SCVGN IP address being listed on any abuse database (e.g. Spamhaus).

If you send bulk or commercial email, you must comply with all applicable laws and regulations in your jurisdiction. In addition:

  • You must publish a privacy policy for each domain associated with the mailing
  • You must have the means to track anonymous complaints
  • You must not obscure the source of your email
  • You must post a complaints email address (e.g. [email protected]) prominently on any associated website and respond promptly to messages sent to that address
  • Recipients must have given affirmative consent (e.g. opt-in), and you must be able to produce evidence of such consent within 72 hours upon request
  • You must use reasonable means to verify that the consenting person owns the email address in question
  • You must include the recipient’s email address in the message body or “TO” line
  • You must honour revocations of consent

These policies apply to messages sent using the services or from any system that refers recipients to a site hosted via the services. You may not use a third-party email service that does not follow similar practices.

Vulnerability testing

You may not probe, scan, penetrate, or test the vulnerability of any SCVGN system or network, or attempt to breach SCVGN security or authentication measures — whether by passive or intrusive techniques — without prior written consent from SCVGN. Contact us first at [email protected].

Excessive use of shared resources

You may not use any shared system provided by SCVGN in a way that unnecessarily interferes with normal operation or consumes a disproportionate share of resources. SCVGN may require you to address coding abnormalities that conflict with other customers’ use. SCVGN may quarantine or delete data stored on a shared system if the data is infected, corrupted, or poses a risk to the system or other customers’ data.

Additional requirements

  • You must maintain valid and current information with your domain name registrar for any domain hosted on the SCVGN network.
  • You may only use IP addresses assigned to you by SCVGN in connection with your SCVGN services.
  • If you register a DNS record or zone on SCVGN-managed DNS servers for a domain where you are not the registrant or administrative contact (per WHOIS), SCVGN may modify, transfer, or delete such records upon request from the registrant or administrative contact.

// Maintenance Windows

SCVGN schedules two maintenance windows per week:

WindowDayTime (BST)
PrimaryMonday18:00 – 21:00
SecondaryThursday18:00 – 04:00 (Friday)

Services may be degraded or unavailable during these windows. We make every effort to minimise downtime.

This is a SCVGN computer system. This computer system, including all related equipment, networks, and network devices (including internet access), is provided only for authorised SCVGN use. SCVGN computer systems may be monitored for all lawful purposes, including to ensure authorised use, for system management, to facilitate protection against unauthorised access, and to verify system security. // Data Handling

Comments

When visitors leave comments on SCVGN sites, we collect the data shown in the comments form, the visitor’s IP address, and browser user agent string for spam detection purposes.

An anonymised hash of your email address may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you use it. See the Gravatar privacy policy. After comment approval, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.

Media

If you upload images to any SCVGN site, avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors may be able to download and extract location data from images on the site.

Cookies

  • Comment cookies — If you leave a comment, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies for convenience. These cookies last one year.
  • Login cookies — When you visit a login page, a temporary session cookie is set to check browser cookie support (discarded on close). Upon login, cookies are set for login information (two days) and display preferences (one year). Selecting “Remember Me” extends login persistence to two weeks. Logging out removes login cookies.
  • Editor cookies — If you edit or publish an article, a cookie indicating the post ID is saved for one day.

Embedded content

Articles may include embedded content (videos, images, articles, etc.) from other websites. Embedded content behaves as if you visited the originating website directly. These third-party sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content.

Password resets

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email.

Data retention

  • Comment data and metadata are retained indefinitely to allow automatic approval of follow-up comments.
  • Registered users’ personal information is stored in their user profile. Users can view, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except usernames). Site administrators can also view and edit this information.

Third-party data sharing

As described in this document, SCVGN avoids sharing your information with third parties. We only do so when required to process your request (e.g. payment processing via Stripe).

Your rights

If you have an account or have left comments on our sites, you may request an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided. You may also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include data we are obliged to retain for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
